The Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar is one of the most common guitars used by musicians which use purely acoustic methods to produce the sound, hence the name acoustic guitar.

How An Acoustic Guitar Creates Sound

The acoustic guitars have a hollow body and a sound board on the face of the guitar. The sound board has a small hole at its center and is often referred to as a sound hole. The sound box in the acoustic guitar improves the way the instrument resonates, thus improving the quality and volume of the sound.

Acoustic guitars are made up of six strings which when struck vibrate, thus causing the soundboard to vibrate. Due to the larger surface area of the soundboard, they displace a large amount of air producing a larger sound than that produced by strings alone. The pickups installed in the soundboard of the acoustic guitar further help in amplifying the sound. The pickups used in acoustic guitars are magnetic and piezoelectric pickups. Magnetic pickups are installed inside the sound hole while piezo pickups are installed under the bridge saddle of the acoustic guitar.

What Are They Made Of?

Acoustic guitars are made up of various materials. The materials used in the construction of acoustic guitars make a great impact on the sound produced. The type of guitar will also sometimes call for specific materials. Also different materials are being used for the various parts of the guitar including the top, sides, back and neck.

The material used for the top of the acoustic guitar is extremely important in determining the sound quality. The top of the guitar i.e. the soundboard is made up of either pine, koa, Sitka spruce or cedar. The most commonly used wood for the tops of many good quality and expensive acoustic guitars is Sitka spruce. Rosewood, maple and mahogany are commonly used for the back and the sides. Darker woods are commonly used for the sides and the back. Maple, ebony, rosewood and mahogany are the woods commonly used for the construction of neck in acoustic guitars.

The Shape

The size and shape of the acoustic guitars also play a major role in the tone produced. Two guitars which are made of same materials but different shapes or sizes produce sound, which slightly differ from one another. Most acoustic guitars have waist shaped or narrowing body which helps in resting guitars on the knees.
There are different varieties of acoustic guitars, two of which are classical guitars and steel stringed acoustic guitars. Classical guitars are nylon stringed instruments which allow performing even the complex of the polyphonic and melodious tunes. Steel stringed guitars are similar to the classical guitars but have steel strings instead of nylon strings and hence have a louder and brighter sound. Acoustic guitars were basically intended for classical and folk music, but are used in all styles of music.

All The Intricate Details

Reverse Headstock - The neck of the Seagull S6 Original Guitar is cut to make an angle of 45 degrees. Then the headstock is attached with reversed grain. It is this process used in making the necks of the seagull guitars, which creates stable necks.

Tuning Made Easy - This Seagull acoustic guitar has a tapering headstock and hence the string pull is straight. This helps in minimizing the neck twisting effect. Hence tuning the Seagull guitar and maintaining consistency is much easier.

The Seagull Guitar Neck - The Seagull necks are designed to provide comfort stability and quality sound. Slim necks provide a comfortable playing experience and reduce fatigue. But very slim necks may have a bad impact on the sound produced. The Seagull necks are designed to balance the comfort as well as provide excellent quality tones.

Double Action Truss System - Truss rods are used to straighten the necks when they become bowed due to string tension. Sometimes the neck becomes back bowed and hence the truss rod must be loosened in order to let the string tension pull the neck back to its original form. Most of the time this technique doesn’t help in getting the neck back to its original form. Hence a double action truss rod is used in the neck of this Seagull guitar. The double action truss rods bend in both the directions, giving better control over the neck.

The Heel - Due to the different levels of pressure and weight placed by different players, the tuning of the guitar is effected. This makes it necessary to retune when the guitar is passed from one player to the other. In Seagull guitars, this problem is eliminated by making the neck stronger by inserting maple dowels through the heel of the neck. This is perhaps the best beginner acoustic guitar in this price range.

Neck Pitch - Neck pitch, or the angle of guitars neck attachment, has an important role to play in the instrument’s tone. If the neck is too far back or front, the quality of the tone is badly affected. The neck attachment system in the Seagull S6 Original guitar is such that the neck pitch is consistent.

Further, the neck and the body are attached by wood to wood connection and hence, the neck- body energy transfer is excellent. Since there is no glue in between the neck and the body, there is no obstruction to the vibrations.

Compensated Seagull Saddle - The Seagull guitars has Tusq nuts and saddles. This helps the guitars to play in tune.
